This carefully structured course is intended to significantly improve participants’ understanding and knowledge of various critical aspects related to drainage systems, including effective maintenance practices, advanced CCTV surveying techniques, detailed analysis of survey reports, as well as the implementation of cost-effective and practical remediation strategies.
Course Objectives
-
To provide in-depth knowledge of drainage system components and their design.
-
To clarify ownership responsibilities and legal considerations related to drains and sewers across the UK.
-
To identify appropriate circumstances for drain investigation and surveying.
-
To develop skills in interpreting survey data and recommending suitable remediation solutions
Module 1: Drainage Systems / Components & Design
This module introduces fundamental drainage components, including pipes, manholes, traps, and their respective functions within a drainage network. Participants will learn about the principles of designing efficient drainage systems that comply with industry standards.
Module 2: Drain Ownership / Drainage Law

Note: Further modules will continue to expand on CCTV surveying techniques, report analysis, remediation methods, and cost management strategies.
The National Drainage Academy (NDA), in partnership with the Water Research Centre (WRc) and leading industry experts, has developed a comprehensive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course designed specifically for professionals in the drainage sector. This course enhances knowledge of drainage systems, maintenance procedures, CCTV surveying methods, survey report analysis, and cost-effective remediation solutions.
Module 4: Identifying the need for drain repair:
Understand how to assess the drains condition and how to allocate a condition grade to the observed defects and complete an e assessment of a drain’s serviceability. Explain the decision-making process used to specify the need for a drain repair from the outcomes of a drain condition assessment and its serviceability.
Module 5 Repair Techniques and Specification:
An overview of the available repair techniques and an insight into their technical advantages and limitations to aid appropriate selection.
Module 6 Quality Assurance:
Reasons for undertaking CCTV inspection and drain repair. Understand the need for good QA to maximise asset performance.
